Food, Love, and Affection

Food, Love, and Affection

On September 23, 2024, the Grade 7 English class participated in a seminar titled “Food, Love, and Affection.” Led by Ms. Kathy “Thy-Thy” the session explored the profound significance of food and its connections to relationships, culture, and stewardship. Students were introduced to concepts such as the balance of Yin and Yang in cooking, emphasizing harmony through the five senses, tastes, colors, temperatures, and elements of food.

In the aftermath of the war in Vietnam, the country faced severe challenges, including a major famine in 1945, which killed over a million people. Vietnam also struggled with poverty, political instability, and economic isolation due to its socialist system. However, in 1986, Vietnam shifted the country towards a market-oriented economy. These reforms sparked economic growth and foreign investment, lifting millions out of poverty.

Today, Vietnam is a rapidly developing country, with a thriving economy driven by manufacturing, exports, and tourism. It has become one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies, though it still faces challenges like environmental concerns and social inequality. The resilience shown in overcoming the famine and war has played a key role in shaping the modern, dynamic nation Vietnam is today.

The seminar also highlighted that Vietnamese cuisine is not just about nourishment but also serves as a connection to nature. Biblical principles of stewardship were woven into the discussion, encouraging students to care for God’s creation and reduce food waste. A key message focused on looking out for others, reminding students of the importance of sharing food and extending love and kindness through meals. This aligns with the Christian value of generosity and service to others. Insights into Vietnamese culture broadened the students’ global awareness, supporting the schools mission to foster holistic growth. By focusing on healthy eating, responsible living, and care for others, the seminar reflected the school’s core values and its vision of developing future leaders who serve both God and the community.
